Policy Statement

At our Centre no child is excluded from participating who may, for any reason, not yet be toilet trained and who may still be wearing diapers. We work with parents towards toilet training, unless there are medical or other developmental reasons why this may not be appropriate at the time.

We make necessary adjustments to our bathroom provision and hygiene practice in order to accommodate children who are not yet toilet trained.

We see toilet training as a self-care skill that children have the opportunity to learn with the full support and non-judgmental concern of adults.

Procedures

• Key person or teacher assistant has a personalized changing schedule for children in diapers or pull-ups.
• With parental consent, children aged two and above should wear pull-ups or training pants when they are comfortable.
• The teacher assistant is responsible for changing diapers; if absent, the class teacher will take over.
• Changing areas are safe for cleaning children.
• Each child has a basket for their diapers or pull-ups and wipes.
• Staff wear gloves and aprons before changing and prepare the area.
• A fresh paper towel is used on the changing mat for each child.
• All staff follow hygiene procedures when changing diapers.
• Changing time is relaxed and promotes independence.
• Children are encouraged to wash their hands with soap and towels.
• Teacher assistants are gentle and avoid negative comments about the diaper contents.
• They do not make inappropriate comments about children’s genitals.
• Older children use the toilet independently.
• Diapers and pull-ups are disposed of hygienically, while soiled training pants are bagged for parents to take home.
