Policy Statement

Our center holds the belief that children thrive when they have a clear understanding of expected behavior and can engage in play and learning without the fear of harm or undue restrictions imposed by others.

Methods

Our dedicated teacher oversees behavior-related matters and is responsible for:

• Expecting positive role modelling from all staff, volunteers, and students.
• Encouraging the use of positive strategies for conflict resolution, aligned with children’s ages and stages of development.
• Applying consistent rules for all members of the Center.
• Praising and endorsing desirable behavior, such as kindness and sharing.
• Avoiding situations where children receive attention for negative behavior.
• Acknowledging and respecting cultural variations in codes for interacting.
• Helping children understand and cope appropriately with negative behavior.
• Managing unacceptable behavior based on age-appropriate methods.
• Utilizing firm and consistent voice tones in response to unwanted behavior.
• Addressing serious misbehavior through explanation and positive reinforcement.
• Collaborating with parents to address concerns about unwanted behavior.
• Providing daily feedback to parents about their child’s day.

Bullying

Bullying involves the persistent physical or verbal abuse of an individual or group by another individual or group. We take bullying very seriously and will not tolerate any form of bullying at any level.

• We intervene to stop the child/ren harming others.
• We ensure that the child/ren who was bullied is immediately reassured and comforted.
• We explain to the child/ren who are demonstrating bullying behaviour why their actions are inappropriate in a way that is age/stage appropriate.
• We encourage the child/ren who are demonstrating bullying behaviour to say sorry for their actions in a way that is age/stage appropriate.
• We ensure that all children receive praise and positive attention when acceptable behaviour is demonstrated.
• We do not label a child as a bully.
• Parents are fully informed of all behaviour issues affecting their child, and we will work together with parents to ensure a positive way forward either if the child is demonstrating bullying behaviour towards others or if the child is a victim of any sort of bullying.
